“The best bottom line in business travel”

Simon Parry,

President, Helen Thompson Travel.

I arrived in Canada in September 1976, landing in Vancouver and moving to Toronto in 1977 to begin a career in packaged goods marketing. I acquired Helen Thompson Travel in 1989 and have been running the business ever since.

My job is to make sure that everything is in good working order so that our team of travel consultants can focus all their attention on the job of servicing our clients.

Today, the travel business is full of contradictions. On the one hand there’s the immense satisfaction we derive from successfully arranging business trips, cruises, vacations, special groups for our clients. The compliments we get from clients help to offset the frustration we often experience from not having control over the end-product. We cannot control the experience our clients get with the airline when they fly to their destination. Once there, we cannot control the experience “in country”. Most of the time everything works out well because we really try hard to stay on top of what’s happening in the industry – with the airlines, cruise lines, resort hotels etc. and only book our clients with trusted suppliers that we know we can count on.

Although the internet is a great resource for both us and the traveling public, there’s really no substitute for professional expertise. Except on the simplest of travel arrangements, I would always deal with a travel consultant. I put them in the same camp as my doctor or accountant. I want the benefit of their expertise and I’m happy to pay for it. “They save me time and money, it’s as simple as that.”

In 2016, Helen Thompson Travel will have been in business for 40 yrs and if we continue to do the kind of quality work we do now, we should have many years ahead of us because I am convinced that there will always be a place for experienced travel professionals. Over the years we have merged with several other travel agencies, which has helped us get new clients and equally important, new travel consultants. It’s a good way to grow but we are always on the lookout for new clients, both corporate and individuals. Why not give us a call?

The internet is great resource for travelers but there’s still no substitute for the expertise and knowledge of a professional travel consultant like me. I’ve been arranging trips for our corporate clients now for 15 years – you’d know many of them if I told you their names. Client confidentiality is an essential part of our business at Helen Thompson Travel.

Everyone at HTT works very hard to stay up-to-date on the many changes in flight schedules and prices that occur almost every day. Knowing how to “work the system” helps me to make sure that our clients get the best possible combination of flight times, pricing, seating and upgrades. I try to think for my clients so that they don’t have to. Will that outbound connecting flight leave enough time for them to get to the gate? Will that seat give them enough leg room? Does the hotel have his preferred suite?

Many of our clients are senior executives and their travel plans are frequently complicated and last minute. We’re no longer talking about simple trips like Toronto/New York City and our clients simply don’t have the time or expertise to do this type of work for themselves, neither do their executive assistants. To try is false economy. Our clients get a much better return on their time when they use it to look after their own clients!

We charge a small fixed fee for our services – not variable like your accountant or lawyer, but when you look at all the extra things we do, the value we add, our fee is an absolute bargain!

When I look back at the years I’ve worked in the travel industry, it is hard to believe the changes that have occurred, There was a time when we had to actually write an airline ticket by hand. Today, it’s all electronic, thank goodness, so we are all much more efficient in getting our clients where they want to go, cost effectively. For our clients, flying these days is generally more stressful. Airport security is now a fact of life with line-ups for practically everything. The airlines have introduced more complexity by breaking down each airfare into components parts such as the location of your seat and the associated leg-room, your carry-on baggage allowance and so on. This allows the airlines  to charge more while still keeping their advertised fares competitive.
